I think that Harry didn't understand it completely but as soon as the starting of HP 4, we see the effect on Wormtail. I am talking of the part when Voldemort is talking to Wormtail in the Riddle House. We know Voldemort badly wanted Harry for his rise at any cost. Now Wormtail says..
